Advancing Careers with Advanced Treatment Planning with a Restorative Focus - a Case Study

By RipeGlobal on 22/11/2020 2:52:09 PM

Dr Rhea Allsopp: From Graduate to Owner of Dental Haus, Australia
Dr Rhea Allsop is 31years old. She has been practicing general dentistry since 2017

Rhea’s Challenges

  • Graduated school of dentistry with little confidence to practice general dentistry.
  • Education was bare bones, general basic fix pros, basic endo, basic communication, no full protocol.
  • Experienced anxiety about the care she provided to her patients.
  • Doubted the effectiveness of the treatment she provided.
  • Had a job that was paying hourly with no cut from what she billed.

Rhea’s Actions

Rhea’s Achievements

  • Her hand skills have improved dramatically.
  • She has the confidence to take on and excel in quadrant and full arch cases.
  • She uses advanced treatment planning protocols for every single case, which was instrumental in gaining a lot of big cases.
  • Rhea opened her own clinic, Dental Haus, and is busy!
  • Rhea looks forward to taking the Implant Live course.

Snapshot of Rhea

Dr Rhea Allsopp owns her own general practice clinic on the Gold Coast, Australia. She is fast gaining a reputation for the great work she is doing on her patients, from simple restorative work, crown and veneer preps, quadrant dentistry, to full arch cases. However, just 3 years ago Rhea was a newly fledged doctor who went to work feeling anxious and unsure about undertaking restorations in cases she had never encountered before.

Transforming Treatment Planning for Success - a Case Study

By RipeGlobal on 28/10/2020 10:36:02 PM

Dr Ekaterina Pugina is 32 years old.

She has been a practicing general dentist since 2010.

Kat's challenges

  • Kat Pugina struggled to attract patients who cared for their oral health beyond emergency visits.
  • Kat lacked confidence in communication, and consequently, struggled with treatment planning.
  • Kat could not find a way past being an emergency dentist. This left her frustrated with the quantity of work she had to do to reach a level of economic stability, and limited the kind of dentistry that she practiced every day.

Kat's actions

  • Kat studied RipeGlobal’s lectures on communication and treatment planning, which transformed her practice.

Kat's results

  • She was able to move beyond emergency dentistry, and learned to communicate the larger picture to her patients using skills she learned in treatment planning.
  • Kat now has a 95% acceptance rate of her treatment plan proposals and boasts a one to three month waiting list.

Dr Kat Pugina faced even more obstacles than the average Australian dentist. After graduating dentistry school in Russia and practicing in a clinic there for some years, Kat immigrated to Australia and sat the Australian Dental Council Exam. She found that the dentistry curriculum taught in Russia was different to Australia and the practice of dentistry in both countries varied dramatically, in the breadth of its practice.

What is your Emotional Price?

In recent years, I've helped many people learn to communicate the cost of dental treatment whilst treatment planning. One of the consistent themes is the recognition of the emotional price that each dentist has.

Human Factors - The Forgotten Part of Treatment Success

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on 03/01/2017 4:51:16 PM

Of considerable interest to me is the fact that human factors are largely ignored in the training of dentists.

I have attained my pilots license twice. Once at 16 and again more recently. It turns out I don't actually like flying small planes, I just like the process of getting my license (small planes tend to stop too often and leave children fatherless).

Dentistry Causes Grief

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on 06/12/2016 4:54:32 PM

One of the most powerful things I ever learned was from a good friend and mentor Michael Melkers.

It was the similarity to grief that learning of any form causes. Once I tell you, you too will see it in colleagues, patients, and friends.

Dont Beg. Dont Fight.

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on 23/09/2016 6:23:25 PM

It is interesting listening to dentists discuss various patients.

Often we hear something like this,

"I tried to explain how important it was to keep the tooth, but after telling and telling them, they still wanted it out."

I have taken his advice to heart and read his opinion piece quite critically.

Don’t Eat Our Young

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on 22/08/2016 4:21:21 PM

Recently, I gave a talk to the Adelaide Dental students. As always, I was impressed by their general level of enthusiasm and desire to do great dentistry.

Dental Students will graduate into a world with more opportunities than I can even imagine.

They will also launch out into a profession that has never been more snarky about each other and with a regulator who, with the best of intentions, has implemented KGB-like "mandatory reporting".

Fees - An Emotional Business

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on 10/06/2016 9:19:53 AM

Like most things, our ability to have a good whinge about things is vastly amplified by the channels of social media.

It is easy to let this depression and anxiety get to us, and then it somewhat becomes self-fulfilling. Having accepted that dentistry is “over” and that patients want easy, cheap, fast, we can focus on providing that, which incidentally, then attracts the patients that want easy, cheap and fast.

A Cycle of Confidence.

When I graduated, my lecturers had me convinced that I was about to be unleashed with cutting edge knowledge.

I wouldn't be doing the radical caries free that could result in you getting a pulp exposure and thus failing your clinical. I would instead be doing the (far more technically difficult) indirect pulp cap,

Forums Vs Literature - Has your dentistry been torpedoed?

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on 06/04/2016 12:31:27 PM

After Pearl Harbour, the only significant part of the US naval fleet remaining in the Pacific were the submariners.

Tasked with attacking enemy shipping, their primary weapon was the Mark 14 torpedo. Due to American naval doctrine at the time, this torpedo was rarely used, however after the Pearl Harbour event, these torpedoes were suddenly used in large numbers by the submariners.

Heisenberg Dentistry

Heisenberg said,

"The more precisely the position of some particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known, and vice versa."

I have already made a slight error. Although Werner Heisenberg did indeed make the above statement with regard to quantum mechanics, what I really want to talk about is the observer effect.

Science and Judgement.

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on 18/02/2016 11:47:47 AM

This is often why decision making in bureaucracies is so slow: checklists have to created and
completed. Scores are weighed and tallied. This official and meticulous looking process then helps arrive at a well documented decision which is justified by external data.

In many cases, it is doubtful how much this removes human tendency for biased, or emotion judgement.

The Tripod

  • Treatment planning is built on a solid tripod.
  • Tripods are interesting things because they are very easy to balance.
  • Add one leg more or less leg and their balance is compromised.
  • Treatment planning is also built on three solid legs.
