Has your dentistry been torpedoed?

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on Apr 6, 2016 12:31:27 PM

After Pearl Harbour, the only significant part of the US naval fleet remaining in the Pacific were the submariners.

Tasked with attacking enemy shipping, their primary weapon was the Mark 14 torpedo. Due to American naval doctrine at the time, this torpedo was rarely used, however after the Pearl Harbour event, these torpedoes were suddenly used in large numbers by the submariners.

How insurance works. Or doesn’t work.

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on Mar 15, 2016 9:53:46 AM

Insurance is a promise.

Every year, customers give insurance companies an amount of money in exchange for the peace of mind that if a certain event happens in the future, the insurance company will cover the cost of that event.

Science and Judgement.

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on Feb 18, 2016 11:47:47 AM

This is often why decision making in bureaucracies is so slow: checklists have to created and
completed. Scores are weighed and tallied. This official and meticulous looking process then helps arrive at a well documented decision which is justified by external data.

In many cases, it is doubtful how much this removes human tendency for biased, or emotion judgement. from the decision, and how much it simply helps to make things justifiable to others and disperses
responsibility.

Tripod of Treatment Planning Part 1

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on Dec 17, 2015 3:07:24 PM

The Tripod

  • Treatment planning is built on a solid tripod.
  • Tripods are interesting things because they are very easy to balance.
  • Add one leg more or less leg and their balance is compromised.
  • Treatment planning is also built on three solid legs.
  • It's simple in concept, but not always easy to achieve.

Sensitivity To Cold And Sweet

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on Aug 19, 2015 6:28:57 AM

This patient has had orthodontic bands on her teeth for around 18 months and this lower premolar has been giving her trouble on and off for a little while.

The patient was complaining the tooth was aching when she eats sweets and when she bites down on it. I tried to delay this case until I had finished the ortho, however it became a bit sensitive to cold and sweet.

Restoring Wear. Single Shade. Free Hand.

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on Aug 12, 2015 6:31:03 AM

This patient has a large amount of wear which is not unusual in regional Queensland. Farmers and operators seem to get more wear on the teeth due to the hot climate drying out the mouth and then dust being abrasive.

After discussing the options advantages and disadvantages of ceramic and composite this patient chose to have composite.

Replacing Pin/Lingual Retainer FPD

By Dr. Lincoln Harris on Jul 10, 2015 6:26:08 AM

Patient complained of discolour and uneven coloured front teeth following previous bonded PFM FPD.

We decided that the discolouration of the anteriors was going to be extremely difficult to even out without full coverage restorations. The patient had uneven tooth colour for quite some time and was very keen to get things as even across the four anteriors as possible.
