This video provides an update in how to diagnose and classify tongue ties in clinical practice. It covers why tongue tie assessments are important for infants, toddlers, young children, adolescents and adults that attend your practice for a check-up or complaint of tongue ties.
Tongue ties, ankyloglossia, occurs when the lingual frenum has not developed as expected and reduces tongue mobility and function. Dentists must be aware of how to diagnose a tongue tie to provide accurate advice to parents and patients who might attend with complaints related to breastfeeding, transitioning to solid foods, speech and other issues related to tongue function. Once the tongue has been assessed properly, it can then be discussed and decided whether surgical management is appropriate for the individual.
