Colour Theory and Shade Matching in Dentistry with Dr Lane Ochi - Master Class
with Dr Lane Ochi
Colour Theory is a language that conceptually and perceptually describes the elements of colour and how they interact.
Understanding colour and colour matching in dentistry can be tricky and your mistakes can be glaringly obvious, resulting in unhappy patients.
Even slight variances in shade play with our eyes, our minds and our dentistry.
There are many factors that dentists have to overcome to produce successful results:
- Illumination of the treatment room
- Optical illusions
- Colour blindness
- Fatigue
Dr Ochi will demonstrate how to use colour theory using his own case examples enlightening the dentist and ceramist on dimensions of colour and the effect of metamerism.
Being fluent in the language of colour, can sharpen your perception of colour, help you to better understand existing colour dynamics, make better predictions, and communicate more clearly about colour.
This class will help you understand:
- The interactions of light, colour perception and shade matching
- The difference between additive and subtractive colour theory
- The phenomenon of metamerism and how it can act as a complicating factor in shade selection
- How to make the best shade selection
- How to make 'chairside' modifications like translucency alteration, adding maverick colours and shade shifts
- How and why camera light meters and your own visual system cannot be trusted

Anterior Composite: Shape, Polish & Light - Practical Strategies for Predictable Aesthetic Success
with Dr. Sam Cope
Anterior composites rarely fail because of the material. They fail because of shape and light.
Small errors in line angles, contour and surface texture can make restorations look dull or artificial, even when shade and bonding are correct.
In this masterclass, Dr Sam Cope will share a practical framework for controlling shape, polish and light reflection to create natural, predictable anterior composites across different systems.
Clear principles. Repeatable decisions. More consistent aesthetic results.
By the end of this masterclass, you will be able to:
-
Identify why anterior composites look dull or unnatural
-
Control light reflection through shape and surface design
-
Improve polish and finishing for long-term aesthetics
-
Achieve faster, more consistent outcomes

“Early in my career, I believed aesthetic success came from using the ‘right’ composite or layering technique. Yet despite good bonding and accurate shade selection, some restorations still looked dull or unnatural. The turning point came when I shifted my focus from materials to shape, surface texture and light interaction. By simplifying my approach and understanding why restorations looked wrong, my results became far more predictable and efficient. This lecture reflects those lessons from practice and teaching.”
