The Marriage of Form & Function: A Crash Masterclass on Occlusal Design

with Dr Michael Melkers

Occlusion is one of the most discussed topics in dentistry and also one of the most misunderstood. Many dentists leave dental school unsure how occlusal theory actually translates into everyday restorative dentistry.

In this practical one hour masterclass, Dr Michael Melkers will simplify occlusion into the core principles that matter most in clinical practice. Through clear explanations and real case examples, you will learn how five foundational occlusal concepts guide predictable restorative planning, help manage functional forces, and improve treatment outcomes.

What You Will Learn

  • The five foundational concepts of occlusion and their role in restorative planning

  • How functional and parafunctional forces influence restorative success

  • The impact of compression and shear forces on teeth and restorations

  • A simplified approach to occlusal equilibration

  • The advantages and limitations of occlusal instrumentation

  • How to better understand centric relation and other occlusal terminology

This masterclass is ideal for general dentists and clinicians performing restorative treatments who want a clearer, simpler way to understand occlusion and apply it in everyday practice.

"I have studied occlusion for over 40 years and spent much of that time being confused and confusing others in its application. We can do better.

In this one-hour masterclass, I have distilled everything that truly matters about occlusion, from the single tooth dentist to the full mouth rehabilitation clinician and everyone in between. I hope you will join me."

Anterior Composite: Shape, Polish & Light - Practical Strategies for Predictable Aesthetic Success

with Dr. Sam Cope

Anterior composites rarely fail because of the material. They fail because of shape and light.

Small errors in line angles, contour and surface texture can make restorations look dull or artificial, even when shade and bonding are correct.

In this masterclass, Dr Sam Cope will share a practical framework for controlling shape, polish and light reflection to create natural, predictable anterior composites across different systems.

Clear principles. Repeatable decisions. More consistent aesthetic results.

By the end of this masterclass, you will be able to:

  • Identify why anterior composites look dull or unnatural

  • Control light reflection through shape and surface design

  • Improve polish and finishing for long-term aesthetics

  • Achieve faster, more consistent outcomes

“Early in my career, I believed aesthetic success came from using the ‘right’ composite or layering technique. Yet despite good bonding and accurate shade selection, some restorations still looked dull or unnatural. The turning point came when I shifted my focus from materials to shape, surface texture and light interaction. By simplifying my approach and understanding why restorations looked wrong, my results became far more predictable and efficient. This lecture reflects those lessons from practice and teaching.”
