How to Avoid Fractures, Failures and Refunds in Implant Dentistry

with Dr Josh Sharpling

Implant failures are rarely random.

Fractured ceramics. Loosened screws. Overloaded restorations. Costly remakes. In many cases, the issue is load control.

In this masterclass, specialist prosthodontist Dr. Josh Sharpling explains how occlusion directly influences implant success and how small biomechanical errors lead to mechanical complications.

You will understand the key differences between teeth and implants, learn to spot high risk contacts before failure occurs, and apply practical load control strategies across single units, short spans and full arch cases.

By the end of this masterclass, you will be able to:

• Reduce mechanical failures in implant cases
• Make confident occlusal adjustments
• Lower financial risk from remakes and refunds
• Improve long term predictability

As a prosthodontist, I see a disproportionate amount of failure. Patients are often referred once something has fractured, loosened or simply not lasted, and they want a solution that will hold up long term. That pressure forces you to be confident not just in making something look good, but in knowing it will function predictably under load.

I have learned this the hard way. Early in my career, I had cases fail, restorations fracture and situations that led to remakes and refunds. Those experiences exposed the gaps in my understanding of occlusion and load management far more clearly than any textbook.

This lecture comes from that process. The aim is to give you the principles and decision-making frameworks that reduce those risks, so you can avoid the same failures and deliver work that lasts.

Anterior Composite: Shape, Polish & Light - Practical Strategies for Predictable Aesthetic Success

with Dr. Sam Cope

Anterior composites rarely fail because of the material. They fail because of shape and light.

Small errors in line angles, contour and surface texture can make restorations look dull or artificial, even when shade and bonding are correct.

In this masterclass, Dr Sam Cope will share a practical framework for controlling shape, polish and light reflection to create natural, predictable anterior composites across different systems.

Clear principles. Repeatable decisions. More consistent aesthetic results.

By the end of this masterclass, you will be able to:

  • Identify why anterior composites look dull or unnatural

  • Control light reflection through shape and surface design

  • Improve polish and finishing for long-term aesthetics

  • Achieve faster, more consistent outcomes

“Early in my career, I believed aesthetic success came from using the ‘right’ composite or layering technique. Yet despite good bonding and accurate shade selection, some restorations still looked dull or unnatural. The turning point came when I shifted my focus from materials to shape, surface texture and light interaction. By simplifying my approach and understanding why restorations looked wrong, my results became far more predictable and efficient. This lecture reflects those lessons from practice and teaching.”
