Saving Patients From Themselves: Making Restorations Easier to Keep Clean

with Dr Michael Frazis

Many restorative failures are not material failures. They are design failures.

Small contour decisions determine whether a restoration becomes self-cleansing or plaque-retentive. This masterclass turns biological principles into practical chairside strategies that improve longevity and reduce complications.

Dr Michael Frazis, joined by Dr Elizabeth Milford, will examine contact point anatomy, emergence profile design, and how subtle contour errors influence food impaction, plaque retention, and periodontal health. Together, they will discuss when to replicate natural anatomy and when to intentionally modify it in cases of periodontal breakdown, while identifying predictable plaque stagnation zones and how thoughtful restorative design, supported by effective oral health care products from Oral B, can improve long-term patient outcomes.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Analyse contact point position and morphology in relation to periodontal stability
• Design emergence profiles that facilitate effective plaque control
• Justify when to replicate natural tooth anatomy and when to intentionally modify it for improved cleansability
• Identify high-risk plaque stagnation zones around restorations and implement corrective design strategies

Anterior Composite: Shape, Polish & Light - Practical Strategies for Predictable Aesthetic Success

with Dr. Sam Cope

Anterior composites rarely fail because of the material. They fail because of shape and light.

Small errors in line angles, contour and surface texture can make restorations look dull or artificial, even when shade and bonding are correct.

In this masterclass, Dr Sam Cope will share a practical framework for controlling shape, polish and light reflection to create natural, predictable anterior composites across different systems.

Clear principles. Repeatable decisions. More consistent aesthetic results.

By the end of this masterclass, you will be able to:

  • Identify why anterior composites look dull or unnatural

  • Control light reflection through shape and surface design

  • Improve polish and finishing for long-term aesthetics

  • Achieve faster, more consistent outcomes

“Early in my career, I believed aesthetic success came from using the ‘right’ composite or layering technique. Yet despite good bonding and accurate shade selection, some restorations still looked dull or unnatural. The turning point came when I shifted my focus from materials to shape, surface texture and light interaction. By simplifying my approach and understanding why restorations looked wrong, my results became far more predictable and efficient. This lecture reflects those lessons from practice and teaching.”
